The star of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow movie, Scarlett Johansson, won’t confirm or deny whether Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner appears in her upcoming solo Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Natasha Romanoff aka. Black Widow first appeared in Phase 1 of the MCU, making her debut in Iron Man 2 before joining up with the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers. Similarly, Renner’s Clint Barton aka. Hawkeye debuted in Thor before suiting up alongside the rest of the team. The characters were bonded on screen by their lack of super-human powers or super-suits, as well as a past relationship that was hinted at in their scenes together.

During one particular moment in The Avengers, both Black Widow and Hawkeye mention an incident in Budapest, and the fans who loved their dynamic pleaded with Marvel Studios to reveal what exactly happened. Now as we enter Phase 4 of the MCU, both Black Widow and Hawkeye have solo projects coming up, a movie and a TV show, respectively. Based on the Black Widow San Diego Comic-Con footage description, it appears Johansson’s solo movie is heading to Budapest and may finally reveal what happened between Clint and Nat in the Hungarian city. However, the film’s star won’t reveal if that means Hawkeye himself will appear.

Sitting down with GMA after the Marvel Studios SDCC panel where the Black Widow release date and cast were confirmed, Johansson finally spoke about filming her upcoming solo movie. However, when asked whether Black Widow returning to Budapest means Renner’s Hawkeye will show up, Johansson joked about Marvel Studios snipers using tranquilizer guns on both her and the interviewer. The actress concluded by saying, “My lips are sealed. You gotta wait and see.”

Some fans may take Johansson’s comment as an indication the Hawkeye does show up in Black Widow, since the actress won’t deny Renner’s possible involvement. Certainly, it would make sense for a movie all about Black Widow to touch on one of her closest relationships, that being Nat and Clint’s friendship. Additionally, the inclusion of Budapest in the movie seems to hint fans will get to see into Natasha’s past, in which Hawkeye plays a key role. Since Black Widow is set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, it may not make sense for Hawkeye to appear in the present (since he’d be in The Raft or on house arrest), but he could show up in flashbacks to the Budapest incident they reference in The Avengers. That would no doubt please fans.

With that said, Johansson didn’t confirm Hawkeye will be in the Black Widow movie, telling fans they’ll have to wait and see. It may be the case that Black Widow won’t include an appearance of Renner’s hero - he may be alluded to or name-dropped. Or Black Widow will focus much more on its title character, rather than pulling attention away from her to include another member of the Avengers. As of now, fans will have to do what Johansson said and simply wait. If Black Widow were to include Hawkeye, it’s likely Marvel Studios wants to keep it a secret so fans can be surprised when they catch the movie in theaters. While one of the cast members may slip and reveal something, or set photos will give away Renner’s inclusion, for now all fans can do is wait and see what Black Widow has in store.
