Letitia Wright is set to break through next year as Shuri in Black Panther and she’s now revealed some new character details for the Wakandan princess. Wright joined the all-star cast of Black Panther last year and for quite some time, her role was unknown. It has since been confirmed that she is playing T’Challa’s sister Shuri - who readers know has quite an important arc in the comics. Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken liberties with characters in the past, it does not appear that they will stray too far away from the source material this time.

Unlike her older brother, Shuri consistently has a desire to lead Wakanda and ultimately be the Black Panther. Even though Chadwick Boseman is currently locked in for that role for the foreseeable future, it is very possible that Shuri could eventually lead Wakanda and take up that mantle. Based on the new character description given by Wright, she should be able to fill that role if it ever comes.

Interview Magazine spoke with Wright about her blossoming career and what it has been like getting involved with the MCU. While she admits she was not a comic reader before, she has become attached to Shuri after her research and was left wondering how she didn’t know about the character before now. So what exactly will Shuri be like in Black Panther? Well, audiences can expect a smart, fashionable, and innovative female star.

Putting Shuri in a prominent role to start should put her on a path for a big role in the MCU moving forward. With the plot synopsis of Black Panther teasing multiple threats and a world ending peril, Shuri’s advanced technology should help combat the forces that oppose Wakanda. Plus, if her goal truly is to make Wakanda bigger and better as these comments imply, it could lead to a rift between the brother and sister down the road and a fight for the throne.

She’s princess of Wakanda, but also she designs all of the new technology there. She has an innovative spirit and an innovative mind, and she wants to take Wakanda to a new place. Also, she has a great fashion sense, better than mine. She’s so vibrant; a beautiful spirit, but also so focused on what she does. And that’s good for other people to see, especially young people to see, because it’s like, “Look, there’s a young black girl who loves technology and she’s from Africa.” It’s something refreshing.

Thankfully, this will not be the only time audiences get to see Shuri. Even though a Black Panther sequel has yet to be announced, it should factor into Phase 4 down the road. But, Wright will actually make two appearances as Shuri next year with her seemingly confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War as well. This scenario could again prove Shuri’s value if she helps defeat the Black Order, especially if she helps lead the attack as well. Either way, this description continues to give the MCU strong female characters that will (hopefully) have bigger roles as the universe moves forward.
