Black Panther continues to pick up accolades during awards season, earning a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. When Ryan Coogler’s installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released back in February, many viewers were impressed by its socially relevant themes and topics, feeling that it transcended the typical comic book adaptation. For those reasons, fans began to make the case Black Panther should be up for numerous awards - something Marvel Studios agreed with. Kevin Feige gave Black Panther Marvel’s first significant Oscars push.

What started as a pipe dream for comic book movie fans is becoming closer to reality. In a pleasant surprise, Black Panther has popped up frequently on several Oscar precursors, including the National Board of Review, American Film Institute, Golden Globes, and Critics’ Choice Awards. It’s had a very fruitful run on the circuit thus far, and has more honors to add to its résumé now that SAG has weighed in.

The guild announced their TV and film nominations today (hat tip Variety). Black Panther received two nominations, with the other coming in the Best Stunt Ensemble category. Check out the full list of nominees in the space below:

For those who have been following awards season to this point, several of these names are the usual suspects in their respective categories. The likes of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, and Olivia Colman (among others) have multiple nominations so far and are all but locked in for Oscar nods. If there’s any real surprise on the SAG list, it’s that Regina King was not nominated for her acclaimed turn in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk. Early on, King was looking like the frontrunner in Best Supporting Actress, being recognized by the Globes and NBR. However, she’s a snub here, with Emily Blunt finding love for A Quiet Place (making her a double nominee) and Margot Robbie netting Mary Queen of Scots one of its first major nominations of the year. It’ll be interesting to see how the Oscars reflect SAG’s selections.

As great as it is to see Black Panther crack the Best Ensemble list, surely fans were hoping for a little more. Michael B. Jordan’s name has been in the conversation for Best Supporting Actor, with his Erik Killmonger proving to be one of the MCU’s most compelling and sympathetic villains. He earned a nomination from the Critics’ Choice Awards, but fell short here. But even though Jordan’s individual performance was bypassed, his terrific work still contributed to the Ensemble nomination.
