Oscar-nominee Naomie Harris stars in the trailer for the crime thriller, Black and Blue. Written by Peter A. Dowling (Flightplan), Black and Blue revolves around Alicia West (Harris), a rookie cop who accidentally films a group of police officers killing a drug dealer on her body cam. After barely escaping with her life, Alicia discovers she’s now being pursued by both corrupt cops and local criminals who’re desperate to destroy the incriminating footage before it’s made public. Left with no one else to trust, she turns to Milo “Mouse” Jackson (Tyrese Gibson), the only local who’s willing to help her bring the truth to light.
Directed by Deon Taylor (The Intruder), Black and Blue features a supporting that cast includes Luke Cage himself, Mike Colter, along with Frank Grillo (The Purge: Election Year), Reid Scott (Late Night), and Nafessa Williams (Black Lightning). The film wrapped production earlier this year and is scheduled to hit theaters in the fall. Now, ahead of then, Sony has gotten the ball rolling on its marketing campaign.
Sony unveiled the Black and Blue trailer at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday night, and has since released the preview online. You can check it out in the space below.
The trailer jumps right into the conflict at the heart of the film and shows Alicia being told matter-of-factly by her superior that, because she’s a cop, “You’re blue now”. Alicia, however, isn’t so easily convinced and remains determined to do what’s right, even when she finds herself being hunted down by her fellow officers and abandoned by the local black community - who, for obvious reasons, don’t want to get caught up in a mess involving the police. After years of supporting roles in franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and James Bond (in addition to her supporting turn in Moonlight), it’s good to see Harris finally getting to lead a genre movie of her own like this. Black and Blue should offer her the chance to really flex her acting muscles too, between its action-fueled storyline and sociopolitical commentary.
At the moment, Sony has Black and Blue scheduled to reach theaters at the end of October. And while it doesn’t have much direct competition that weekend, it might have trouble breaking out at a time when audiences are typically more in the mood for something that’s Halloween appropriate (like Zombieland 2: Double Tap, which Sony has set to open a week earlier). Still, Black and Blue seems like a tight-knit thriller with something to say, and shouldn’t have too much trouble turning a profit. If word of mouth is good, it might even become one of this fall’s surprise success stories.
