Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who plays Black Canary in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), has revealed her favorite Black Canary scene from the film. Birds of Prey, which is the first film to bring together a female superhero team, has had a peculiar journey since its release. The film had the worst DC opening in over a decade, and at one point, had to double its current box office gross to be a hit. However, despite falling short financially, Cathy Yan’s superhero project has been well received, and from a storyline perspective, successfully brought new characters into the DCEU, such as Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary.

Although fans have seen Black Canary in a live-action setting before in the TV show Arrow, Birds of Prey was the first live-action film for the DC comic book character. Smollett-Bell, who said she was introduced to her character through the Injustice 2 video game, brought many of the characters popular traits to life such as her singing (which Smollett-Bell did herself), her hand-to-hand fighting ability, and of course, the Canary cry. Also, Smollett-Bell’s character is arguably one of the more engaging ones due to her dilemma of working for Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask, while also being a person who ultimately wants to do good. Interestingly, the actress behind Black Canary shed some light on her favorite scene, and it is one that perfectly shows the many sides of Canary.

Smollett-Bell retweeted a short clip of Birds of Prey in where Black Canary decides to save a helpless Harley Quinn from being abused by some goons. Along with retweeting it, she shed some light on how much she likes the scene, and also when the scene was shot: “This was one of my favorite Dinah scenes to shoot. And the first fight scene we shot #BirdsofPrey #BlackCanary.”

The scene Smollett-Bell discusses is definitely one of the standout moments for the character. It’s a significant moment in her journey because instead of simply driving away, she cannot fight off the urge to help Quinn. It is also one of the early signs of the team that finally unites at the end, slowly starting to come together. In addition to that, it also highlights the slick action that’s in the film and the hard training the actors had to do to prepare for such a film.

As well as highlighting the scene as being one of her favorites, the actress does also share another interesting tidbit that it was “the first fight scene” shot. Considering it was the first one, Smollett-Bell deserves a lot of praise for how well she pulled off the action, as this was a Black Canary-dominated action scene with none of the other members having their moments of action to give her character a break. When or if we will see the character again remains a mystery due to the unfortunate box office results for Birds of Prey, but with scenes like this one and how well Smollett-Bell brought the different shades of Black Canary to life, it’s easy to see why a lot of fans would want to see the character back on the big screen.
