Leaked concept art from Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) shows Harley celebrating her newfound emancipation with a new look. Margot Robbie’s take on the beloved DC character made her debut in Suicide Squad, and was one of the most widely-praised elements of the otherwise critically-derided movie. Warner Bros. began developing more projects with Harley in mind, starting with Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey movie.
Birds of Prey, like Suicide Squad, is an ensemble movie - this time focusing on a trio of Gotham City vigilantes: Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). They work together with Harley Quinn, who has apparently been emancipated not only from Belle Reve prison but also her relationship with Jared Leto’s Joker, to help save a young girl called Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).
With a new lease on life comes a new look, and concept art that emerged online shows Harley sporting shorter hair, bright colors, and her trademark mallet (though it’s considerably smaller than the cartoonish comic book version). This is actually a variation on the costume that we saw in the “See You Soon” teaser for Birds of Prey, as well as in set photos of Robbie. In the final costume, however, Harley is wearing blue-and-black striped shorts instead of these yellow harlequin overalls, and also a colorful fringed jacket.
It’s possible that this particular outfit might still make an appearance in the movie, since unlike Harley’s fairly limited wardrobe in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey set photos have indicated that she’ll have a lot of costume changes. We reached out to Warner Bros. for confirmation as to whether this costume is from Birds of Prey, but didn’t receive a response.
Birds of Prey reportedly has a budget of just $75 million, the lowest of any movie in the DC Extended Universe and roughly on par with the budget for the first Deadpool movie. Of course, as Deadpool proved, a small budget isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it can allow filmmakers to get more wild and creative, since there’s less pressure to deliver a safe crowd-pleaser.
Winstead has said that Birds of Prey is “genuinely funny and weird” and “feels from the 90s,” so DC fans will hopefully be in for a treat when it arrives in theaters next year. And who knows - perhaps we’ll get to see those harlequin overalls in action!
