Gamers anxious to get their hands on BioWare’s Anthem are in for a little good news: The developer’s current plans for a release place it somewhere around March 2019.
Although BioWare has been tight-lipped about Anthem and its story, it has teased potential players with a few trailers showing a world that looks similar to Guerilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn. However, in Anthem, players will encase themselves in large mecha suits that will allow them to navigate their environment, take on enemies and fly across a massive open world. It is also a multiplayer game, where players can interact with other players in real-time and join squads to take on missions, similar to Bungee’s Destiny and Destiny 2. Each mecha suit, called a Javelin, is highly customizable, allowing players to take on the game’s world in any way that they prefer.
Game Informer reported that an Electronic Arts financial call revealed the target date for Anthem’s release. The company announced that the plan for Anthem is to release it in the last month of the financial year’s fourth quarter, basically in March 2019. BioWare had initially announced a release date for 2018, but delayed the game another year because of pressure to get the title as perfect as possible, pressure that includes EA possibly shuttering the studio if the game fails. With one flop already under its belt with Mass Effect: Andromeda, BioWare cannot afford to have a similar situation with Anthem.
Anthem is one of the most ambitious titles for the developer to date. BioWare has already promised that it will be unlike anything gamers have ever played, but that it will still have the same elements that make it feel like it came from BioWare. The company has made a name for itself by creating games focused on storytelling, something that is still often a challenge with multiplayer titles. This isn’t its first foray, though, into creating a multiplayer game. It had some success with Star Wars: The Old Republic, a MMORPG set in the universe of Star Wars.
The gameplay trailer for Anthem certainly looks and feels like something players would expect from BioWare and the look and feel of the title alone is enough to make most players’ jaws drop. But it still looks a lot like other similar games, so it’s likely that BioWare is holding off on its best footage and game announcements until closer to its official release date. Only time will tell if Anthem will become a hit for the developer.
