Gamers anxiously ready to get back to the wonderful world of BioShock might not have to wait much longer: it looks like a new title in the franchise is currently in development.
The BioShock titles originally took players to the underworld retro world of Rapture, where humans shoot themselves up regularly with supernatural powers to the point that they’re not quite so human anymore. Meanwhile, little girls who look like they’re dead inside roam the abandoned hallways of Rapture, searching for ADAM, a substance that allows for ability development. Protecting them are the Big Daddies: giant robots that look like they’re encased inside vintage diving suits. The first game released in 2007, followed by a sequel, BioShock 2 in 2010. In 2013, BioShock Infinite broke away from Rapture and took players to a vintage city in the sky called Columbia. All three games are now available as BioShock: The Collection on PC and multiple consoles.
Word of a new BioShock game comes from a tweet made by Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier. While working on a story about Mafia III, he learned about the new BioShock title. This comes as good news to fans of the franchise, especially after the worry that the series had ended with the shuttering of Irrational Games, the developer that created it. But back in 2015, distributor Take-Two Interactive explicitly said that Irrational’s closure would not serve as the end of BioShock and reiterated that its company remained committed to the series. Considering that the franchise has sold over 25 million units combined, that should not come as a huge surprise. But now, over two years later, it seems that Take-Two, along with publisher 2K Games, has kept its promise: a new BioShock game is on its way.
The franchise is so popular that there was even an attempt to bring it to the big screen, though those BioShock movie efforts ultimately failed. A new game would definitely please fans, but it’s likely that the next BioShock will feature a different setting from the games that came before it. Just as Columbia became the setting for BioShock Infinite, the next game will probably feature a new retro-inspired city, complete with new characters and a new look.
This is certainly exciting news for BioShock fans who can’t wait to return to those special worlds created in the first three games. Now the next question is: when can players expect to see an official announcement and release date?
