Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are officially returning to play the world’s most righteous rock n’ roll time travelers in Bill & Ted 3. Before Wayne and Garth or Bevis and Butthead, there was Bill and Ted. 1989’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure introduced the rocking doofus pair in a sci-fi comedy involving time travel via phone booth, the kidnapping of famous figures for the purpose of passing history class, George Carlin as a future man and lots of air guitar.

For the 1991 sequel Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, the time travel shenanigans of Excellent Adventure gave way to a story about Bill and Ted traveling to hell, outwitting Death and making him their ally and returning to earth to defeat their own android doubles. In the years since Bogus Journey seemingly wrapped up the saga of Bill and Ted, rumors have sprung up about a possible third film. Recently, those rumors became more concrete, with talk of Bill and Ted 3 solidly coming together.

Now, there is official news to report about the future of Bill and Ted. BLOOM announces that at long last, the movie will go forward under the title Bill and Ted Face the Music, with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves returning in the leads. The movie is currently in pre-production, with a script by original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot confirmed as director (he has been attached to the project since 2012). Reeves and Winter said in a statement:

Confirming plot hints teased in a 2017 interview with Keanu Reeves, the new movie sees Bill and Ted in middle-age living lives nothing like what was promised after they supposedly launched themselves on a path to rock stardom in the original films. The pair has written thousands of songs by this point, but none of them is the promised tune that would save humanity. Now thanks to their musical futility, the space-time continuum is tearing around them. Bill and Ted have no choice but to embark on another excellent time travel adventure, accompanied by their daughters, more historical figures and several musical legends. Their goal? To find the greatest song ever written and restore order to the universe.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”

Though never huge box office hits, the original Bill and Ted movies achieved a special place in pop culture thanks to their silly comedy, charmingly goofy lead performances and memorably wacky plots. Recapturing that particular magic will be tough, but going by the description, Bill and Ted 3 at least has the wacky plot part down pat. Also promising is the presence of Dean Parisot, whose Galaxy Quest has a zany-yet-earnest spirit very similar to the Bill and Ted movies. In another positive development, William Sadler’s Death reportedly shows up in the new script and will be included in the movie.
