Bill & Ted Face The Music has officially cast the roles of the duo’s grown-up children. The pair, played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves and known collectively as the rock band Wyld Stallyns, first debuted in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. On the verge of failing high school, they were aided by a man named Rufus (George Carlin). Announcing himself as from the future, he revealed that together they were destined to write the music upon which a peaceful, utopian world would one day be formed. Gifted with a time-traveling phone booth, Bill and Ted journeyed through history in order to guarantee they passed their final test and ensure they weren’t separated. The film was a surprise hit, prompting the 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.
A third installment has been a cult film fan’s pipe dream for many of the years that followed. Despite occasional signs of hope from the film’s stars, the prospect of continued Bill & Ted adventures - outside of the animated series - seemed destined to remain in limbo. An announcement in March, however, revealed an official release date for the film. If that wasn’t proof enough for fans of the films, original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon have already written the script. On top of that, Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) has been confirmed to direct.
With filming expected to begin in New Orleans this summer, news regarding the production continues to ramp up. According to THR, the roles of the characters’ respective children have been cast. Ted’s daughter, named Billie Logan, will be played by Brigette Lundy-Paine. Bill’s daughter, named Thea Preston, will be played by Samara Weaving. Lundy-Paine previously starred in Atypical and Downsizing. Weaving, meanwhile, starred in the Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and had a recurring role on the Showtime series SMILF. The grown-up offspring will be a result of Bill and Ted’s romances with the two time-displaced princesses from the original films. Bill & Ted Face The Music will see the characters now in middle-age and living mundane lives, having not yet lived up to their destiny and beset by pressures on all sides.
Fan favorite addition William Sadler will also return as Death, who the pair encountered in the second film and ultimately joined the band. Winter has stepped away from the limelight over the last few decades, doing mostly voicework and remaining behind the camera. Reeves, however, went on to play some of the most prolific characters in the world of film, including Neo in the groundbreaking Matrix films. He’s currently experiencing another resurgence in popularity and cultural significance, thanks to the John Wick franchise - which just recently released its third installment and confirmed that a fourth is on the way. Not to mention his scene-stealing cameo in Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe.
That Reeves fever looks set to carry over into the near future. Though he ultimately missed out on playing the villainous Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios is said to be interested in him for their upcoming project The Eternals. Fans of the actor, however, remain eager to see him return to his comedic roots and the character that first propelled him to prominence. With this new casting announcement, it now feels safe to believe that it’ll actually come to fruition on the big screen. How pivotal a role the character’s daughters will play in the film remains to be seen. The mere fact that they each named their daughters after the other, however, is a perfect sign that the Bill & Ted Face The Music script is every bit as funny as the originals.
