The new teaser for FOX’s BH90210 shows more of what the meta-revival has planned, while also showing the original cast together on TV for the first time in nearly 20 years. While revivals and reboots are all the rage in television these days, credit to FOX and to the returning cast members of Beverly Hill 90210 for trying to do something a little different than the usual. In this case, that would be creating a show within a show, wherein the new series is about the original cast gathering together to try and get a more traditional revival of the 90210 off the ground, only to find themselves in a soapy drama that at least looks a bit more like real life.
The original series ended nearly two decades ago, meaning by today’s television standards, it’s pretty shocking the likes of Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Shannen Doherty, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling haven’t reunited before now. But there’s no time like the present — or the doldrums of summer broadcast television — to make those dreams come true, as the gang’s finally ready to get back together and hang out at the Peach Pit in the new teaser.

The teaser is actually much shorter than the one previous released by FOX, and it doesn’t have to work quite as hard to explain its concept to the viewer. In fact, it all but skips over what the premise of the show actually is and instead attempts to appeal to the audience’s sense of nostalgia, by focusing primarily on the fact that the original cast is almost all completely back. Of course the event series is going to be a little bit somber due to the untimely death of Luke Perry earlier this year. That Perry’s passing didn’t derail the series entirely is something of a surprise, one that underlines just how much confidence FOX has in its summer event series. It’s also a little telling, however, that BH90210 hasn’t provided a closer look at what viewers can expect, especially considering it’s less than a month away from premiering.
Nevertheless, it would seem as though FOX is willing to take some risks with its programming as of late, as though BH90210 may seem a bit odd, it pales in comparison to What Just Happened? the Fred Savage-starring show about a show that doesn’t exist. If nothing else, perhaps the two meta-series will make for some unusual summer TV viewing.
