Now that Gus Fring is officially on board for Better Call Saul season 3, the next question is whether any other Breaking Bad characters might show up on the hit AMC spinoff series. Most of the speculation about possible cameos centers naturally around Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, but Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman is another character many fans would love to see pop into Jimmy McGill’s world.

Given that when Breaking Bad began neither White nor Pinkman had ever met Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman, Mike Ehrmantraut or any of the other major characters on Better Call Saul, shoehorning them into the new series might seem like a bit of a stretch. Then again, if you want to make the cameo happen, you can always make it happen. And one Breaking Bad star has hinted that maybe such a cameo is ready to happen.

During an appearance Tuesday on The Ellen Show (via TV Line), Paul dropped a major hint that Jesse Pinkman will be showing up on Better Call Saul season 3 in some capacity. As Paul told Ellen when she asked him if Pinkman might appear in the spinoff:

“God, I hope so…Maybe I already shot it. We just — or they just — wrapped the [latest] season.”

That could have been just an innocent pronoun-based slip by Paul, or it could be an indication that he is back working with Vince Gilligan. Either way, Paul just gave fans a lot more fuel for speculation. Not that viewers needed more reason to be excited about the return of Better Call Saul.

While it’s clear Paul wants to appear on the show, the better question might be whether Better Call Saul needs him – or Cranston for that matter. Sure, it would be cool to see Pinkman and/or Walter White show up, but beyond the momentary nostalgia factor, what would either character really add at this point? Better Call Saul already has its own compelling characters and fine performances by a terrific cast. The spinoff has long-since established itself as its own entity.

While it makes perfect sense to have Gus Fring appear on Better Call Saul, considering his pre-Breaking Bad connection to Jimmy and Mike, it makes much less sense for either Walter or Pinkman to do anything but walk-on for a brief appearance that would amount to little more than a bow.
