Bernie Sanders is now the first presidential candidate to become a Twitch streamer, as his official Twitch account is now open and can be followed for videos of his presidential campaign. 2020 will see the end of President Donald Trump’s first term in office and he has declared that he will be running for re-election.
There are currently twenty-five candidates aiming for the Democratic Party nominee position and Bernie Sanders is currently considered to be the front-runner. The Sanders campaign is in full swing and he is making an effort to use as many platforms as possible in order to reach the general public, which includes streaming video websites.
One of the platforms in which the Sanders campaign will be engaging is Twitch, as he is now the first presidential candidate to have his own official Twitch account. Those hoping for a shot at taking down the possible future President of the United States of America in a game of Fortnite or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be in for a disappointment, as the purpose of the Twitch account is to use it as a platform (alongside websites like Facebook and YouTube) to stream videos of the Sanders campaign, in a video series that has the tentative name of “Bernie TV.” According to Vox, the purpose of the channel is to feature regular video updates from the campaign trail from both Sanders and his staff members, some of which will take place before and after debates.
Twitch.tv is one of the most popular websites in the world and people can make a lot of money from advertisers due to the size of its audience, like when Ninja was paid a million dollars to play Apex Legends. It isn’t just new video games that can accrue big audiences on Twitch, as Magic: The Gathering tournaments can bring in over one hundred thousand viewers and streams of people playing Grand Theft Auto V while roleplaying as specific characters have become a huge hit on the service. The potential audience on Twitch is staggering and it’s surprising that none of the other candidates have beaten Sanders to the punch, something that could give him a significant edge.
As of the time of writing, the official Bernie Sanders Twitch account has over twenty-five thousand followers but is only following the account for the Washington Post. The first official stream on the account is expected to happen before the first Democratic presidential primary debate, which is due to take place on June 27, 2019.
