Going into the premiere of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, many superhero fans wondered whether The Man Without Fear would finally get a proper screen adaptation. After all, 2003’s theatrical Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck in the titular role was seen as a highly divisive effort at best and a downright clunker at worst. It’s telling that it took over a decade for the character to be resurrected on-screen, but thankfully, Marvel did indeed fix the mistakes made previously....

And after seeing what the show is about, you’re even more likely to fall into one of two camps of initial reaction: intrigued or deridingly dismissive. For those who instantly scoffed at those promos, your reaction is completely understandable....

With the launch of Destiny 2’s Season of the Worthy update in March, Bungie will finally be eliminating loot boxes from the game. Bungie is only the latest company to reassess how they handle loot boxes in video games, following the path EA created after the loot box blowback in the Star Wars: Battlefront series. Loot boxes have a shaky history in the world of video games. There are those who feel that the practice is essentially gambling, especially when players can use real world money to purchase access to these boxes....

Chantal Thuy will play the DC Comics character Grace Choi in The CW’s upcoming series, Black Lightning. This latest addition to the network’s stable of superhero shows stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, a retired vigilante and family man, who is drawn back into the fray when his kids’ lives are put in danger. The series will not cover origin material, and it’s expected to be a more mature offering than The CW’s other DC series, Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl....

Mahershala Ali simply called Marvel and asked to be cast as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige made several big announcements during Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con, but among the most exciting was that Blade was going to be introduced into the MCU, and that 2-time Oscar-winner Ali would be playing the iconic character. The character Eric Stokes Brooks, a.k.a. Blade, was introduced in 1973 in the comic The Tomb of Dracula #10....

Sofia Boutella says her titular character in The Mummy is the “definition of a feminist.” It’s been a great summer so far for movies about female empowerment, with not only Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) kicking intergalactic butt in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but Diana Princess of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) finally showing her full potential in the first-ever Wonder Woman solo movie. Opening this week is The Mummy, starring Boutella, who unlike Saldana, Gillan and Gadot, is portraying a character originally conceived as a male....

Watching Bumblebee will definitely spark a sense of déjà vu as it’s essentially a remake of Michael Bay’s original Transformers film - but it’s also much better than Michael Bay’s 2007 franchise-starter. Director Travis Knight’s 1980s-set, nostalgia-filled prequel is a soft reboot-in-disguise that carries the hopes of giving the Transformers franchise a jump-start; from a creative standpoint, Bumblebee triumphantly finds the humor and humanity that was missing from the saga the way the AllSpark Cube was missing in Bay’s first Transformers....

The upcoming ’90s-set superhero origin story Captain Marvel may create a plot hole in The Avengers, a movie in which Nick Fury claimed that Thor was the first alien S.H.I.E.L.D. had encountered on Earth. If so, it’s a perfect example of one of the biggest challenges of the shared universe model: trying to maintain a consistent timeline amid an ever-more complex map of movies and TV shows. That’s particularly the case with Captain Marvel....

Chris Hemsworth reveals he turned down Star Trek 4 because he wasn’t satisfied with the script. A couple years prior to his big breakout as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth had a small, but memorable, role in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot. In the opening sequence, the actor portrayed George Kirk, father of James T. Kirk, who heroically sacrificed himself so the crew of the U.S.S. Kelvin could get away to safety....

Two new posters for the Child’s Play remake show Chucky killing Buzz Lightyear and Slinky from the Toy Story franchise. Chucky slashed his way to theaters back in 1988 for Tom Holland’s original Child’s Play movie and has returned for a number of lackluster sequels. Toy Story on the other hand has only had three films in the franchise so far, but all three of the movies have gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews....

The first season of Netflix’s Daredevil series set a new standard for what can be done with superheroes on the small screen. Eschewing the family-friendly mildness of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the YA drama focus of CW’s DC universe series Arrow and The Flash, Daredevil instead brought a new level of grittiness and adult themes that would carry over into its sister series, Jessica Jones. With season 2, the stakes for Matt Murdock are being raised with the addition of two new fan-favorite characters to the mix: The Punisher and Elektra....

Principal photography for the last Fox X-Men film began on June 28, 2017, and was relatively muted by modern standards; it was barely celebrated on social media, and there were no major set visits by the press. It wrapped up after three-and-a-half months, finishing on October 14....

He’s proven himself a total badass no matter what planet he’s on and he’s shown as much real courage and loyalty offscreen as he has on it....

There are heroes, there are villains, and then somewhere on that spectrum lies Wade Wilson a.k.a Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). Deadpool’s aggressive – and pretty much brilliant – marketing campaign continues to chug along towards the film’s release next week. Along the way, audiences have gotten a better understanding of the film’s basic premise, its protagonist’s general sense of humor, and the sort of characters that would join him on his journey towards fully becoming The Merc with the Mouth....

Sad news out of Hollywood today. Reports have surfaced that veteran actor Debbie Lee Carrington has passed away at the age of 58. Carrington played roles in a wide variety of projects throughout her career, but was probably best known for playing an Ewok in Return of The Jedi, Thumbelina in Total Recall, and her involvement in the Chucky movie franchise. In fact her scene in Total Recall that sees her gut a man with a bowie knife before jumping on a bar and opening fire on a group of Mars police is one of the most remembered scenes from the movie....

The follow-up issue to Batman and Catwoman’s wedding, where Selina Kyle left Bruce Wayne at the altar, Batman #51 doesn’t directly touch on the fallout of the disastrous nuptials. However the next entry in Tom King’s Batman makes it clear that not everything is alright in Gotham. Bruce Wayne is on a self destructive path after being abandoned by the only woman that he loves and that means bad things for Batman....

Considering Marvel’s track record of success - and the near universal praise received by The Winter Soldier - it was less a question of whether Captain America: Civil War would make truckloads of money, and more of just how many truckloads it would make. As of Friday, Civil War has now crossed the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office, and is now the third highest grossing film of the year in that respect....

The Cloverfield Paradox released with one of the most audacious marketing stunts in cinema history. However, instead of changing the game, all it did was show the flaws in J.J. Abrams’ industry-dominating mystery box theory. The mystery box has become the Abrams punchline, an iconic, occasionally-mocked summation of his ethos towards storytelling and the practicalities of movie releasing in general. The basic idea was popularised by the filmmaker himself during a 2007 TED talk: the anticipation and suspense of a work - the used example was a literal mystery box Abrams got as a child - is as important as the work itself....
